How to use this calculator
- Add each separate wall run.
- Enter the selected stud spacing.
- Choose a waste allowance.
- Review the per-run base count and purchase quantity.
How the calculation works
Each wall run is divided by the entered spacing and rounded upward to a whole number of spaces. One stud is added for the second endpoint. Waste applies after all run counts are combined.
Formula
Spaces per run = ceil(run length × 12 ÷ spacing in inches) Studs per run = spaces + 1 Purchase studs = ceil(total studs × (1 + waste %))
Worked example
A 20 ft wall at an entered 16 in spacing needs `ceil(240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16` studs. With 10% waste, the purchase count rounds to 18.
Project considerations
- Spacing is an editable planning assumption, not a universal requirement.
- Each separate run receives two endpoints; shared corners require project-specific adjustment.
- Openings, corners, headers, blocking, bracing, loads, and building codes are not designed.
Frequently asked questions
Does this require 16-inch spacing?
No. The displayed spacing is only an editable example.
Why are endpoints counted for every run?
Each entered run is treated independently so the assumption stays clear and the per-run breakdown is reproducible.
