2. Enter actual board width, planned gap, and selected stock length.
3. Set waste and, if useful, an explicit fasteners-per-board assumption.

How the calculation works

Areas are combined, then divided by the effective board coverage width to estimate linear decking. Waste is applied before conversion to whole stock boards. Fasteners are a simple editable multiplier of purchase boards.

Formula

Linear decking = total area ÷ (board width + gap)
Purchase boards = ceil(linear decking × (1 + waste %) ÷ stock length)
Fasteners = purchase boards × entered fasteners per board

Worked example

A 200 sq ft surface with 5.5 in boards and 0.25 in gaps needs about 417.39 linear feet. With 10% waste and 12 ft stock, plan for 39 boards. At an entered 16 fasteners per board, the summary shows 624 fasteners.

Project considerations

• The fastener field is optional planning arithmetic, not an installation recommendation.
• Area-based linear footage does not model row orientation, seams, or cut optimization.
• Beams, footings, joists, loads, railings, spans, structural design, and code requirements are excluded.
