How to use this calculator
- Add every basic wall run and enter wall height.
- Enter stud spacing, the number of plate runs, and selected stock length.
- Choose a waste allowance.
- Review studs, plate footage, stock pieces, and wall area.
How the calculation works
Stud counts use the same explicit per-run endpoint method as Wall Stud Calculator. Plate footage is total wall length multiplied by the entered number of plate runs. Waste applies to studs and plate footage before whole purchase quantities are rounded.
Formula
Studs = sum(ceil(run length × 12 ÷ spacing) + 1) Plate length = total wall length × entered plate count Plate pieces = ceil(plate length × (1 + waste %) ÷ stock length)
Worked example
Two 10 ft walls at 16 in spacing need 9 studs each, or 18 base studs. With three entered plate runs, plate length is 60 ft. At 10% waste and 8 ft stock, plan for 20 studs and 9 plate pieces.
Project considerations
- This is a basic non-structural quantity summary based only on entered assumptions.
- The plate count, spacing, stock length, height, and waste are user-controlled.
- Headers, beams, sheathing design, fasteners, blocking, bracing, loads, spans, and code compliance are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from Wall Stud Calculator?
Wall Stud Calculator narrowly counts studs. This tool also summarizes plate footage, stock plate pieces, wall area, and stud linear length.
Does this design a wall?
No. It performs quantity arithmetic and makes no structural or code determination.
