How the calculation works
Project areas are combined and divided by one entered sheet area. The base and waste-adjusted results are each rounded upward to whole panels.
Formula
Project area = sum(length × width) Sheet area = sheet length × sheet width Purchase sheets = ceil(project area × (1 + waste %) ÷ sheet area)
Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft area is 200 square feet. With editable 4 ft × 8 ft sheets, the base count is 7. At 10% waste, 220 square feet requires 7 whole sheets.
Project considerations
- The 4 ft × 8 ft default is visible and editable, not universal.
- This area estimate does not optimize panel layout or offcuts.
- Sheet thickness, grade, rating, fastening, structure, and code requirements are not recommended.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 10% waste sometimes not add a sheet?
Both base and adjusted coverage are rounded to whole sheets, so a small allowance may remain within the same rounded quantity.
