How the calculation works
Each segment length is converted to feet and multiplied by its entered quantity. The resulting lengths are added, then converted to inches, yards, and meters. Linear measurement describes distance along a line, not surface area.
Formula
Segment total = (feet + inches ÷ 12) × quantity Total linear feet = segment 1 + segment 2 + … Meters = total feet × 0.3048
Worked example
One 10 ft 6 in segment plus one 8 ft 6 in segment equals exactly 19 linear feet, or 228 inches and approximately 5.79 meters.
Project considerations
- Linear feet measure length only; width and thickness are not part of the result.
- Quantity multiplies an individual segment length and must be a whole number.
- Cutting allowances, stock lengths, splices, and pricing are intentionally excluded.
Frequently asked questions
Are linear feet the same as square feet?
No. Linear feet measure one-dimensional length, while square feet measure two-dimensional area.
Can repeated pieces be entered together?
Yes. Enter one piece length and use quantity when several pieces have the same length.
